I saw two intended-for-laughs Easter cards I found interesting.
One had a family standing in a pew with the caption
"If your clothes aren't itchy and uncomfortable, you're doing Easter
all wrong."
The other showed a family heading up the walk toward the church
with the caption
"If we leave before the last song,we can hit the buffet early."
The photos looked very much like Easter when I was growing up.
(Very much the June Cleaver,Kodak moment sort of thing.)
It's just as well that I've left behind sentiments such as those.
I don't need sugar overloads or colorized baby chicks to help me
celebrate spring.
I can visit the ducks at the city pond near my house with as much
fun as I can the relatives I only see at alternate holidays and funereals.
Somehow,I think I can survive without a new pair of slippey shoes
or any garment involving puffed sleeves or dotted swiss.
We'll sing " Hot Cross Buns" just as we did with Mitch Miller and
Lawrence Welk and we'll enjoy the Rankin-Bass version of 'Peter Cottontail'.
We'll try not to correct those who say "road to Gravure" for rhotogravure
as Garland and Astaire stroll in the Easter Parade.
But,mostly,we'll try to commemorate the holiday as y'all seem to be doing.
Enjoying the weather, loving your friends and family, seeking out simple, homely
pleasures that are available every day.
It's not that this Sunday isn't anything special but that every day is-or should be....
Instead of trivializing the holy, let's sanctify the humble, ordinary thiings like walks
and household chores, gardening, making a meal, reading or listening to music.
These are the moments that life is renewed for-whether it be a seed within the earth,
a butterfly in its cocoon or a Saviour within His tomb.
Truly sacred things are with us twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year,where-
ever we might be.
They're there in the midst of flowers and rainbows and they're there amid the acrid
smoke and asphalt of a battlefield.
Sometimes, they are hidden like the polychromatic eggs and marshmallow rabbits.
We overlook them on the 'assigned' days only to have them reveal themselves later
when their presence seems a more special and intimate gift.
Enjoy your Easter. Have a pleasurable Pesach.
Whatever your beliefs, believe in Life,Love and one another.
