Too bad the 'draft' story is a hoax. The draft bill was actually sponsored by Rangel. " The House voted 402-2 to defeat the draft bill offered last year by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y. Even Rangel urged Democrats to vote against the bill, and charged Republicans were cynically trying to use the measure to escape election-season questions about the war in Iraq."

Didn't take long for the cynicism to get ugly, did it?
* actually, we can trace it back to the first post, but it stands *

Why would you consider it ugly? It's true, and it's unfortunate that the party is relying on s**tballs like Democratic Underground for their 'news'. They're no better than Faux.

One interesting aspect about the now defeated (but not completely dead- there are still mutterings and stirrings regarding draft reinstatement- particularly considering the devestating need for MANY more troops to stabalize Iraq and the serious lack of trained and available soldiers at the moment) draft bill is that it specifically addressed exemptions and eliminated them. Meaning that you would no longer be exempted from the draft due to little things like college or.... being gay.
SO- With openly gay soldiers being drafted and pressed into service (which many would willingly do, I might add) the Don't ask, Don't tell policy would effectively be crippled, thus finally forcing the military to address the issue of rampant hate crimes (which do sadly still occur on a regular basis- not that anyone is interested in reporting such right now based on the belief that it would be unamerican to say ANYTHING negative about our military due to thje current situation)
So, out of great evil, some good would actually come.

Why would you consider it ugly? That wasn't directed at anyone, and certainly not you and RTB, b'guy. I was just saying that the rumors, insinuendos and mud are flying thick and fast and it's going to be hard to keep track of what's actually true over the next month. In a political year, any candidate can be tracked back to saying something darkly suggesting they're planning to tax the air you breathe anyway, so I try to focus on first-tier analysis -- NPR, etc. Also, I was pretty sure if "No Child Left Behind" was going to reinstate the draft, even I'd be aware of it. Incidentally: Jasmine=evil lying sack.

Meaning that you would no longer be exempted from the draft due to little things like college or.... being gay. I still may have been exempted due to the fact that I am partly blind, and partly deaf which would be detriment to the mission and I could be a danger to my fellow soldiers if I was drafted. Also, I think I would be exempted since I am my father's only son, so I am the only one that can carry my father's name.

The hearing and sight problems may have done it for you, but it was my understanding that the 'only son' clause had gone the way of college deferment

i think you may be right on that point.
however if they would just call the people that are on IRR, individual ready reserve, they should not have to reinstate the draft. then they would have a pretty much trained group of people.

Last night Cheney was making a lot of noise about how they don't need more troops in Iraq. According to Cheney, they will be training the Iraqi troops so everything will be hunky dory. Whatever that's worth.

That's why I was imagining all of Cheney's words in Darth Vader's voice.

In current administrations terms of course, 'training' is a three week process.
I'm not making that up or being fascetious. That's the level of training that we're giving the Iraqis
