I've only seen part of it. I was flipping through the channels one day and ran across it.

There have been two films that I really didn't like much the first time I saw them then grew to love them later. One was House, the other was The Princess Bride. The reason for my initial ambivalence was the TV ads. The ads for House made it seem that it would be a straight-up horror, and the ads for The Princess Bride made it seem like a swashbuckling fantasy. In both cases I was ready for a straight genre film and so the comedy struck me as a lame parody. In both cases, when I watched them later I couldn't imagine why I hadn't liked them in the first place (especially TPB). As for horror, I must admit a certain weakness for the gore. There was a time when I was planning on a career in make-up effects. Actually, the friend who got into it with me went on to work in the business. He was one of the supervisors of the makeup fx department on Buffy in Seasons 1-3. He's even mentioned in one of the special features. I think the S3 or 4 discs have a feature about the effects and they mention the bugs that the mayor ate in S3. The guy they're interviewing says that they were trying to come up with a way to show the mayor eating them and Mike Pack just grabbed some Tootsie rolls and sculpted them into bug legs. I was happy to hear him mentioned. As far as actual scare factor, my top movie is probably The Ring. For my taste they kept the creepy going during the whole investigation. The fact that there were so few "gotcha" scares actually helped with this. Always expecting more jolts made me get more tense than I probably would have been otherwise. I tried watching Ringu (the Japanese original) but I couldn't get past the low budget effects or the subserviant Japanese female characters. I have a thing for balsy women.

I think I remember seeing House a couple of times...
G'wolf, funny you mentioned The Princess Bride. Recently SMG was on the MSN Live Chat the other day, she was asked what was her all time favorite movie, and she answered The Princess Bride was.

The Princess Bride rocks!!
I have it on DVD, and I also own the book. I'm a sucker for sword fights. Probably why I really enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean. Well that and Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp are both hot. ;D

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
"Stop saying that!"

My personal favourite scary movie is (drumroll) that's right, you guessed it- GREMLINS! Of course, it was really just comedy, but I absolutely adore that movie! Even though not a single gremlin appeared to be disgruntled . Ah, well...
As for pure horror, I have yet to watch 'Misery,' but judging by the fact that my mother has never been able to look at Cathy Bates again, I'm guessing I'll have to Jaws was great, and as cheesy as it was, 'Pet Cemetary' creeped me out too. However, the thing that got to me most isn't even a horror movie, per se- it's Buffy episode 'Hush.' Creepy, creepy, creepy!
Also, the list needs a few added. Where's the Hitchcock stuff?

Cute cartoon TealBox! ;D
You're right, I forgot to add some Hitchcock films. There's just not much room on the list.
I always liked The Birds when I was a kid. I never found Psycho to be particularly scary but I appreciate the film much better now that I'm older.

I'm a fairly paranoid person. Not in the sense of government conspiracies as much as I think someone is hiding behind the door. This is why I don't normally watch horror movies. This is an example of how paranoid I am. My apartment is fairly open. Not many places a person could hide. One large closet and the shower are the only two places someone could actually conceal themselves. I glance in these places before I go to bed, or else I can't sleep. I usually only watch horror movies that come highly rated, like The Ring. Otherwise, I don't think my heightened state of paranoia is worth it. What's that behind the door? Uh oh. Some people who think I belong in the rubber room. OK, I'll go quietly.

I personally like the Friday the 13th series. I am always rooting for Jason.
I also like the Halloween and Nightmare series as well. The only one I haven't seen out of this bunch is Halloween 6, how come they won't show it?
There are also many others I like.

oooh, yeah, the nightmare on elm street series were always my favourite when I was a kid. I don't think anything compred to it, but then I'm not a kid anymore. I actually think the japanese version of the ring much better than the american version. I don't know why, but it felt more creepy, more real. Gore doesn't do anything for me. It just looks horrible but it doesn't scare me. Last year 'The Village' was quite good too.
