I totally agree with Feigy.
Religion is a personal belief, and opinions are not nescessarily facts - so when discussing the (for example) descent into hell of unbelievers or the vengeful wrath of a deity, a bit less of the emphatic declarative would not go amiss.
That goes for everyone, OK?
Let's keep this nice and mellow - that's what I want this forum to be like.
;D

Well, I dunno if this particular thread can stay mellow, but it can at least stay respectful of the people who show up in here.
When I saw you post ITL I thought I'd been busted with the power trip hehe

Everyone has a right to believe in what they think is correct. The trouble is when people's beliefs become so strong that they begin to take away the rights of other people, and their beliefs. That's the greatest flaw in religion in my opinion- it's something so strong that it can make people do horrible, horrible things.
Almost every war has some kind of religious root. This nasty Iraq situation would have worked a whole lot better for you southerners if, say, the people their weren't raised to hate each other (and the Americans). And even now, one party is trying to write bigotry into the constitution for cripe's sake!
I love the way Bill Maher sums up religion (and if you don't know what he thinks, I'm sure as hell not gonna be the one re-posting it!).
Basically, I'm just tryin' to say, don't overstep your boundaries- live and let live.

I like Bill Maher. I agree with a whole bunch of what he says. So, I of course don't need to ask. Well said DG. I think that was the first thing that really bothered me about the various churches that I attended as a kid. I was once told that it is better to be cold or hot, than to be luke warm. This puzzled me in so many ways. When I asked about it, (I was 12 at the time) I was told that to believe and do nothing was being "luke warm" and is a hypocritical way to live or embrace religion. Being the laid back person I am, I can't help but find this idea to be the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard. I can believe in things without taking action. Or I can take action without throwing away my higher reasoning. I don't have to be fanatic about something before I commit to it. Heck, I'm a bit of a fanatic about Angel etc. But I didn't go nuts and kill people to keep it on the air. (I just speculated about it in the 1million ways to kill the frog thread like so many of us did). So basically, if any "religion" were to imply that I was a lesser believer because I am luke warm (which was originally my issue with religion) than I would say bite me and stick to not alligning myself with organized religion. In summation, I just don't think it's necessary to go around using religious beliefs as a primary source of social control or manipulation....that NEVER goes well. But then again I'm not all that fond of control and manipulation anyway... but it happens none the less.

For the sake of peace keeping Bango... I think a simple yes (without the assumption of what MaxC reads or does not read) would have sufficed. There is no need to treat people disrespectfully, regardless of whether your God is a vengeful God. Just a reminder.... Everyone has their own opinions, right or wrong they are intitled. Besides, we are all friendly around here so please make sure you are not stepping on people while you step on their opinions. There IS a difference. Okay, Now back to the regularly scheduled debate. He asked me Feigy, and I gave him reasons why I believe 'yes'. And I wasn't disrespectful to him. He asked me, and I gave him my reasons. That's the problem with talking to people over the internet, because they don't really know the expression of what you really mean. They just see your words, and automatically assume you're jumping on someone else when you're not in the first place...You can write something, at a calmful state of mind, and the person on the other side sees it and assumes you're firey with rage.

Several different topics here: To Tjlol... IW scared me because I though he was a girl talking about mutilating people, and cement, and ripping limbs off and stuff. Now I know he's a guy it kinda all makes sense... To BangoDont worry, no offense was taken because you answered truthfully and honestly and I don't believe you were attacking or anything. I just wanted an honest opinion. I have read the bible as I was bought up in a Christian primary school (age 11 and below). Unfortunately, if that is the God you are worshipping to, and praying to everyday, then any religion to do with the bible is not for me. Someone or some being that vengeful is in my books unenlightened. So I choose to be destroyed - but maybe this is my hell. I am prepared to accept any consequences that may be put upon me for whichever religion is right though, so there isnt any fear or regret on my part. Anyway, I hope I havent offended you or anyone else since religion is such a touchy subject.

Obviously the point is moot since MaxC wasn't bothered by what you said. But you said it yourself... people only see your words and not the state in which it is written. But that is the responsibility of the writer, not the reader to convey. I just wanted to make sure that things stayed cool in here is all. I'm not trying to tell you what you can and cannot write. I only want to remind people of the obvious because sometimes we need the reminder.

Well, people should be warned before they come here. This is the Offend-O-Rama threads, and it seems to me, that there will come times when you're in an Offend-O-Rama thread, and people will get rowdy and offensive. Does it not?
