I know one place Feigy could be useful.
Even Py!!!
Surely, there will be an increased dessire for counsellors after Virginia Tech.....
We had a school close in Nashville because a kid mouthed off about copying the incident as a joke.
I thought of Enzo and his friends.
There seems to be two 'one-size-fits-none' strategies authorities use in cases like these.
One is the 'Sky-is-falling,expell the Anti-Christ' approach Enzo's school used.
The other is the 'tuck-your-shirt-in,plese-use-a-silencer-while-classes-are-in-session' bit
that notes aberrant or disruptive behavior but doesn't follow through to see what's wrong and how it can be fixed.
Both accomplish too little if the student is serious or truly disturbed and are too extreme
if the child is innocent or joking.
The one thing NOT tried is closely examining the individuals and circumstances, putting
counselling before sanctions, making sure any action protects ALL concerned for the
duration and working toward helping the 'problem' students move ahead with their lives
in a way that leaves everyone safe, secure and respected.
All these follow up strategies should be tried before things go sour.
As we found out from our own lad's case, they were plenty ready to punish him as if he
were really ready to bomb something but never quite got around to investigations, counselling, etc.
He,his' co-conspirators' and their 'victims' were pretty much ignored once the choice to expell and arrest was made.
So much for believing they had a killer on their hands.
I'm angry that kids who are actually sick are ignored.
I'm angry that innocent kids have their lives disrupted.
I'm angry that some kids can still think it's fun to joke about mass murder
after all that's happened over the years.
The one thing all versions of these scenarios need is careful scrutiny
and follow-thru.
Instead,we have people who dispense the same reaction to kids with
guns and box cutters and kids with lurid t-shirts and jelly bracelets.
We need more Feigies in the schools and fewer Fluties and Snyders.
Sorry about getting on my but I don't know which makes me more
irate: the necessary work going undone or the brilliant, caring people not getting to
put their skills to work.
Who needs evil when we've got a mother lode of stupid?
