Has anyone else read Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight yet? It totally makes up for the fact that Astonishing X-Men isn't putting out a new issue for 3 months. I started jumping up and down while reading it and having flashbacks to Tuesday nights so many years ago. For those of you who have read it, or have no plans to and don't mind spoilers: Where on Earth is Willow?
I'm not so much shocked that Dawn's giant as that she's not a virgin any more. Back when I was like seven and she was doing Pete & Pete, Michelle Trachtenberg was my first crush. You always kind of want to live in a bubble world about things like that.
I'm not sure I would really like the military organization stuff on TV (it would be too much like the Initiative), but for some reason it works here.
I'm glad to find out that "The Girl in Question" has been effectively nullified (well, Angel and Spike still went to Italy and acted like jack asses, but at least we know now that Buffy wasn't actually in that episode).
Who is Amy's boyfriend, and why do they hate Buffy so much (well, other than the being a rat for years thing, but that was more Willow's fault for not turning her back as soon as she could).

I found the Dawn as a giant thing shocking, and kinda strange. A bit funny though. It definitely would not have worked on television.
I'm also not sure about the secret headquarters with all the screens. I mean where did the Scoobies get all the capital to get all this stuff?
I guess it's possible that Giles had access to all the money the Watcher's Council had in the bank. You know they were loaded.
This is all stuff that probably wouldn't work on screen, but it does work for the comic.
I am loving the dialog. It's cool that they're stringing us along with the plot. Just like old times.
The Amy reveal was nice and shocking. I wonder who the "boyfriend" is?
I think Amy hates Buffy because she sees her as the cause of all her problems. I think the whole rat thing, along with the magic addiction, really screwed up her head.
I'm so excited to see they are going to do a Faith arc - it's mentioned in the letters section.
I really can't wait to read the next episode.

Yes, I went through quite a few Joss interviews today. Have you seen the number of writers from the show who have agreed to come on and write some issues, and then the list of characters Joss has mentioned wanting to bring into the comic? If this thing keeps on track it will be just like the show except without any actors. I believe the Faith story is going to start in issue 5. I'm excited to see what's up with her. Has she become a sort of squad leader from the Slayer commandoes or has she tried to distance herself from them? I also want to see Willow and Giles, and, well, everyone. This is going to drive me crazy waiting a month between each issue.

Faith's story is gonna start with issue 6, to be exact. It's not gonna be written by Joss, but trust me, Brian K. Vaughan is up to the task.
Issue 5 is gonna be a standalone written by Joss.

I did make a guess on who Amy's boyfriends was ... Adam. We should start a pool with all our guesses.
I don't think Amy was referring to Buffy when she said "I'll help you kill her". She didn't mention Buffy specifically, so I'm more inclined to think she was talking about Willow.
Also, I've been slightly spoiled about Issue 3 so .....

I didn't think about the fact that she said "her" instead of specifically mentioning Buffy though. Good eye there Nick. ;D

I brought this along with all my Marvel's that came out that week (New X-Men #36 and New Avengers #28). I didn't like it. I felt it was missing something. I didn't find the Dawn is a giant and the Amy thing shocking at all. I kinda thought it was borin but I did enjoy Xander comments about wanting to be called Nick Fury. On the brightside, great cover art by Jo Chen.

Tell me more about viewing comics online.
Dawn's a giant,huh?
Hmmm....her dad's a blond quasi-jerk named Hank....
There may be some cosmic significance to that -especially if they introduce any insectoid or arachnoid characters.
We may have given too cursory an acceptance of Amy's villiany.
Oh,yeah,we need a minor bad guy.
Most Sunnydale folk were warped,Amy's mom was evil,Amy was a rat a while-surely that could cause villiany as easily the Silver Age Luthor losing his hair.
Yeah,that'll work...
IF Amy is a full-blown villian, she has more than a little reason to be angry.
Rats don't have a very long life-span.
She could have died of old age waiting for the Scoobies to get around to curing her.
Then, too, nothing is more annoying than having the people you were counting on to join you in being stupid get smart and clean up their act while you're still at the it's-all-harmless-fun stage.
Add in some possible sexual tension and 'professional' jealousy and you can get a lot of plausible reasons for Amy to go anti-social.
If one wanted to be subtler, maybe Amy's not really evil.
She could be Holtz/Justine/Walsh/Connor evil-lite.
(These are sometimes more dangerous.)
She could be working with someone to kill 'her' as a necesary evil for the greater good.
Maybe even for 'her' benefit....
Amy could be duped by a true Big Bad or they both could be playing this straight for good or bad.
If Amy has gone naughty,I'd love to see her come up against Faith.
Faith could handle her plus she'd see through any self-serving rationalizations Amy might have for becoming the Wicked Witch of Wilshire Blvd.
If Amy weren't a throwaway sinister sorceress, she and Faith could become an occult heroine Thelma and Louise, 2/3 of a Whedonesque Birds of Prey, Wanda Maximoff and Mystique........
A "good" Amy could be a nascent Emma Frost to the new academy of Potentials and student Watchers and witches.
Pure villiany can only go so far.
'Good guys' with flexible morality are as unlimited as the writers' imagination.

Tell me more about viewing comics online. Why? You a cop? Because if you're a cop and I ask you have to tell me, you know that, right? Well, very few can be viewed directly online (though I think Marvel and DC let you read a free issue of their new series on their site to try and get you into buying it), but you can get a lot of comics to go from the Internet to your computer. I just have CDisplay and then I look up torrents for the ones I want.

I could tell you what I do but then I'd have to kill you.
Let's say I'm one of those unworldly folk who hasn't kept up with the tech side of things and isn't quite sure what's out there-much less what's legal/condoned/encouraged and what's in the gray,quasi-acceptable realm of things that everyone does and nobody minds until some jerk abuses the privilege and makes the suits mad over lost face and lost revenue.
I prefer to 'try before I buy'.
In my youth,I'd read the pictographs on the stone tablets the merchants had on their revolving racks long before I gave the clerk my furs and shells in payment.
They didn't mind because I had a LOT of stone slabs at home and I gave them LOTS of furs and shells for the stuff I chose to take home.
I'd think it was the same principle.
If there are more books, comics and other periodicals out there online (like newspapers) it'd be a boon to those who can't handle the paper-and -ink versions.
Chemical-free,treeless,pick-the-font-you-want reading material is a real blessing to those who use their computer to provide the stories they see and hear.
(Plus, they're easier to store in gigabytes than gigaboxes.)

Thanks,Teal!
No,I'm with the police.
They let cops be short but you still have to be fit, ethical and sane.
Picky,picky,picky.....
Someday,I'm going to have to study bit torrents and youtubes and all that stuff.
I see 'Flash Required' and wonder if by newer version they mean I need Bart or would Wally still suffice.
(or Eugene Thompson if you have Linux)
I might even repair the speakers the cats et so I can hear sound from my pc.
Ah,well.....

I actually just learned how to use torrents a year ago. In fact, about two years ago I was opposed to illegal downloading (well, I think it was more I was terrified that if I started the authorities would bust down my door as soon as I opened the file). Other than it being illegal though, I think it is great. Comic books weren't a part of my childhood. If I hadn't downloaded some to begin with I would have never thought to buy a real comic book. A similar thing has happened with me and video games. I've been playing video games all my life, but there were a lot of series from the '80s or '90s that I never got into because my older brother had never bought any of those games when I was little. I went back and played those older games on my computer, and then went and spent money on the new games in those series (or at least on games made by the same company).
Anyway, I think Amy is actually an evil pterodactyl in disguise. Not really, I just realized we were straying far from talking about Buffy.

[Geekman]I finally got to read it today, yeah!!!!!!![/Geekman] I just loved that Dawn is like 50 feet tall, but she still is whiny. At least she has something to wine about.
I love Sgt. Fur....I mean Xander, glad to see that he still has his sense of humor. Did anyone else he kind of talked like Faith that one time. The dialog was witty and sharp as ever, and it was awesome. Glad the four year hiatus didn't make him lose his sense of dialog for the series.
I guess the goverment is still angry at Buffy for shutting down the DRI, I saw Amy coming when they talked about cheese.
I loved it.

Not only did Joss Whedon's first issue of Runaways come out today BUT so did issue 2 of Buffy S8. I enjoyed this issue much more. More action and what the hell is going on between Buffy and Xander? I'm very confused. Plus its good to see Amy back and Dawn is still a whiny giant.

Ahhh, my old friend random speculation, how I've missed you. I've found the first two issues nothing short of fantabulous. Spot-on characterization, gorgeous artwork and dialogue that you just can't find on TV these days...it's like Buffy never left. My one complaint is pacing: I realize that on a monthly schedule, it's important to squeeze in enough developments per issue to keep people interested, but I'm not crazy about how quickly we went from Amy being sent out as a decoy to her being in Buffy's room raising zombies. The pacing felt a bit unnatural here, and I think every reader would've appreciated a little more build-up and time spent with our Slayer squad before we started slaughtering them. Naturally, it was worth it for the final page's big reveal, but I hope this doesn't become a recurring problem.
Buffy and Xander? A very bold move that certainly brings up some interesting possiblities. I realize it's probably going to be wildly unpopular, but ye of little faith should remember who's writing. I think, up to this point, it feels far more natural than I would've anticipated.
Any thoughts on who the floaty feet/cape(?) from Issue 1 might belong to? Should be very interesting. I'm betting that who/whatever it was is our new big-bad (Amy's always seemed like more of a small-fry).
As for her much-discussed "boyfriend," we've got a few hints...
1) The subject is a badly disfigured male who appears to be being kept alive only by her magic.
2) Amy requested a weapon's lab for him to use.
3) This being was trapped in Sunnydale because of the events of "Chosen" and thus is probably someone we've met before.
For me, this narrows things down to two possibilites:
Rack, the magic dealer, is the only male character Amy has ever really interacted with. Although he was apparantly killed by Dark Willow, it was in his own magical brothel. Perhaps Amy was waiting in the wings to revive him? She's already probably done him sexual favours, so she could concievably see him as her 'boyfriend.'
Warren Mears, however, is the more likely candidate. Although he's definitely dead, that doesn't mean he stayed that way. Sure, The First took his form, but it took Buffy's shape as well, so there's no reason to suggest he didn't come back. Amy was also able to channel his essence into Willow in "The Killer in Me", showing she had some knowledge of who he is. The two could do a lot of bonding over how Willow screwed up their lives, and his technological prowess could require a government-funded weapons lab. His present skinlessness would account for the general's disgust toward him, and would also explain why we haven't been given so much as a peek at him (the exposed flesh might give things away).
Is Warren alive? How would Andrew feel about this? Where does Giant-Dawn do her shopping?
Man, it's good to have Buffy back...
