Not many of you would have heard of Du'a Khalil Aswad. I certainly didn't before yesterday. This is one of those "non-news" that doesn't make the headway in the news, one of those little things that slip through the crack. And then I read this
And ... I don't even know where to start, or even how to comment. It's not as if this is the first time I've heard of these kind of killings so I can't plead ignorance. It's that fact that I, and I suspect so many of us, have become inured to these kind of things. So much so, that we barely began to show any concern.
And it shouldn't be this way. And it mustn't. Every now and then, we get a wakeup call to do what's right. To help in any way we can. Too often, the wakeup call gets left on the roadside, by using the excuse that there's nothing much we can really do. Not this time.
In a way, this blog is my little way of helping to spread the word. Maybe some who read it will be inspired to help spread the word, or even to action. A person once said to me, "The only useless thing to do, is to do nothing". So do something.
Here are some suggestion on the Whedonesque board on some of the things you can do. (credit ladygrey)
1. Go to the Equality Now website and donate $1.00.
2. Buy an "I am Dua Khalil" shirt. Better yet, buy two, and send one to a friend or family member. (I just bought one)
3. Attend your local Can't Stop the Serenity event. Proceeds from the event goes to Equality Now
4. As suggested much earlier, check out this micro-lender. Tell people you know that they can help.
5. Blog about this. Post a link on your website. Print out Joss' post and put it on a community bulletin board. Call a local reporter and ask them to cover this story.
6. Call your Mom and tell her that she is/was a strong female role model for you, and that you're grateful to her.
7. Tell a child you know that she or he can be whatever she wants when she grows up.
8. Go watch Joss' speech again.
9. Keep talking about this, and any issue that you feel passionately about.
10. Write a letter to Iranian officials to help ban "Honour-Killings"
Every little bit counts.
