You know, the guy with the crazy ex-wife and all the jail drama? You can scroll back to my earlier blogs for a refresher if you like.
I haven't thought of him in ages. His drama got to be too much and we even fell out of touch as friends. I just found out at work today that his brother just killed some people in a neighboring town.
That's if Bonnie's right about Nathan being his brother. She could be right but I'm waiting for Heather to text me back with confirmation.
Heather actually knew his family so she would know if Brandon and Nathan really are brothers. They have different last names since they have the same Mother but a different Father.
Nathan's picture looks vaguely familiar. One of his brothers came to my house and picked up Brandon's car while he was in jail over the whole Crystal ordeal. I think it was Nathan, but this was 4 years ago so I'm not sure.
Here's one of the news articles:
BONNE TERRE — A man killed two women and one man before turning the gun on himself just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.
The man who is believed to have been the shooter has been identified as Nathan Fortner, 25, formerly of Bismarck, but with a more recent address of Festus.
Fortner had been in trouble with the law before and had charges pending for possession of a controlled substance, forcible rape and first-degree robbery charges.
St. Francois County Coroner Jim Coplin identified the victims as 19-year-old Danielle Bement and her mother, 37-year-old Christine (Dunn) Snider and Snider’s boyfriend, 35-year-old Derek Nash. Autopsies will be conducted Wednesday.
Police are also investigating to see if he had a connection to the death of Ericka Wade, who was found dead Tuesday night. She had disappeared late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Her cause of death is not known at this time.
Police had indicated they did not know the relationship of the victims to the shooter. On Fortner’s Facebook page, he lists Bement as his fiancé. Both are graduates of Bismarck.
At about 5 a.m. that morning, he posted “Just trust n god n u will go a long way and never trust no one I love u cameron.” In his Facebook bio, he had posted his son, Cameron, “means the world to me ...”
The murders occurred at 113 Boulder Drive in the new Boulder Creek Duplexes off Raider Road Tuesday morning.
An eye-witness who saw much of the events of the morning was watching the morning news and drinking his coffee when he heard a gunshot.
He said he went outside and “saw a young man waving a gun in one hand” and with the other hand, the man was dragging a woman who was carrying a baby.
“He was cussing, she was screaming and the baby was crying,” he said.
He said the gun was a large, chrome handgun. The young man appeared to be dragging the woman and baby to her black truck or SUV parked in the driveway. His white car was parked behind her truck and it was running, he said.
He said he had seen the young man at the house before and had heard that police had been called to the house a few times during the past week.
He was unprepared for what he saw Tuesday morning.
“I saw that gun flying around and he didn’t look too stable, so I went back in and called 911. While I was talking to the 911 operator, I heard another gunshot. The operator told me not to go back outside.”
He went to his window and saw the male resident of the house lying crumpled in the doorway. The man looked dead.
The doors of the black truck were open, and the young woman was slumped inside the car with the baby.
“He ran off while I was on the phone,” he said. “Police said she had been shot and was in the truck, and that he ran into the woods where he shot himself.”
By noon, the eyewitness was still feeling the effects of the morning.
“My nerves are shot,” he said.
Police Chief Doug Calvert was not far away when dispatchers told him to respond to a call that someone was trying to kick down the door and a woman inside was screaming. He was later made aware gunshots had been reported.
“I saw a white male running toward the highway,” Calvert said. “He was wearing a black jacket. At that time, we went into emergency response mode.”
Backup arrived and they all approached the duplex.
At the front door, which had been obscured from view, he found a male in his 30s unconscious.
Inside was a child about 3 years old unharmed, who was placed in the care of one officer, Calvert said. Police also found a 37-year-old woman unconscious in one of the bedrooms.
Outside, police found a 19-year-old injured but conscious woman and a child about 18 months old in a black SUV or truck in the driveway. The woman was taken to Parkland Health Center in Bonne Terre, where she died.
The two children have been placed in the custody of the Division of Family Services. Calvert said DFS was trying to place the children with family members.
Meanwhile, other officers approached Fortner, who they say was holding a handgun. He was about 500 feet from the house.
“They advised him to drop the weapon,” Calvert said. “At that point, he took his own life.”
At the second press conference Tuesday afternoon, Calvert said they were still piecing together what happened and there was no clear motive. “We are working on it, the Highway Patrol is working on it. We hope to have more in the weeks that follow,” he said.
Calvert said it was a tragic event. “My heart goes out to the family members who lost loved ones in this.”
The complex of duplexes was recently developed and hadn’t had many problems before, officials said.
The couple had moved into the new subdivision about six months ago, according to Kyle McDowell, one of the owners of the Boulder Creek Duplexes development.
“The boy lived with them, but the daughter was not on the lease,” McDowell said. “We don’t know anything about the young man.”
Prospective tenants are screened and background checks are done on each before they may rent a unit in the subdivision, which opened in April.
“Our tenants are great,” McDowell said. “We are concerned about them and work to make this a safe place for them to live.”
Calvert appreciated all of the help he received from other agencies and from the city.
Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted Bonne Terre including Desloge, St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, Farmington and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Ste. Genevieve and Washington county were on standby.
The North County High School was put on lockdown for about an hour as a precaution but also to keep traffic limited.
Superintendent Dr. Yancy Poorman said the school was contacted and made aware of a domestic dispute where gunshots had been fired. A police officer was stationed at the high school for about an hour. Alert Now messages were sent to parents to make them aware of the situation and that all of the students were okay.
Fortner was charged in connection with a fight between his family and the Scherffius family in 2006. Another Fortner and a Scherffius family member pleaded guilty to felonies. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and peace disturbance and was placed on misdemeanor probation. It appears a warrant was issued for his arrest recently in connection with a probation violation.
Fortner was on probation for second-degree burglary and property damage stemming from 2003 and a probation violation hearing was scheduled for January.
Fortner was charged with possession of a controlled substance related to an incident in January 2009. A preliminary hearing had been scheduled this month.
Earlier this year, Fortner was indicted on forcible rape and first-degree burglary charges. The indictment alleged Fortner broke into a woman’s house in 2008 and had sexual intercourse with her, using force. The case was one of a few scheduled for trial on April 14.
It's just so weird that I may have dated his brother. I'm so glad things didn't work out with Brandon. I can't imagine how he feels right now if that is the case though. It would be bad enough to lose your brother, but to have him be a killer has to be worse.
