A lot depends on the size of the town, but normally they don't want to pick anyone for jury duty with half a brain. They usually want people they can influence so I can't imagine why tj got picked.
The smaller the town the harder it probably is to get out of since the pool is so small to begin with.
I got called once for regular jury duty and once for a grand jury. The grand jury was interesting. You met once a week for a couple of months (I was in school at the time and it was summer) and you decided if the cases could go to trial.
Whe I got called for the regular jury duty I lived about 2 blocks away from the Will county border so I had to go into downtown Chicago. The Will county courthouse would have been a lot simpler to get to.
I ended up sitting all day waiting to be called. I didn't even get called until the very end of the day, but they rejected me as a juror.

Well, Auntie clearly you showed up with half a brain. ;D
I have no idea why they picked me. I was a reporter and I said I was professionally obligated to share any news with my employer. And the judge told me I couldn't. During voir dire the defense all but insisted I be on the jury -- like it just wouldn't be a jury without me in it -- and the prosecutor raised no objections, which also seemed odd to me. Under normal circumstances I imagine you really don't want a reporter on your jury, either side.
In retrospect that ... really didn't work in his favor at all, did it? ;D
Not to commit anyone to an evening of television, but they're showing back-to-back episodes of "Nip/Tuck" at 11/10c on FX (they're really good ones -- "Manya Mabika" and "Mrs. Grubman"), followed by "Clerks" uncut at 1/12c on Comedy Central's "Secret Stash." Ill probably be around for both. And if anyone wants to hang out and natter about them, that could be fun.

Clerks is always worth a watch, whether it's the movie or the animated series.

I might stop in for Clerks tonight though I do have it on dvd so I can watch it without those pesky commercials but at least this will help us all stay together.
Depends on what I end up doing tonight though.
Well, the Jury orientation was painless. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. Then I went and got an oil change.
I was back home by 10 so I accomplished quite a bit this morning already. Usually I'm still asleep right now - on Saturdays.
I'm actually going to go back to bed though. I got a headache and it's a rainy day so it's the perfect day to sleep in.
The Judge told us that we're on Jury duty for the next four months. We'll usually find out 12 or so days ahead of time if we're called to serve on a trial. He divides us up into A or B group so we're rotated ever other week which cuts down on the number of times we'll be called.
Plus he said that most trails in our area settle out of court so we probably won't end up having to show up for the trial -but it'll suck if you've already had to take the day off work. You don't get those hours back unless someone else wants to give their hours up.
He said the average is 4 days total service. We get paid a whopping $18 a day for serving, we get $12 for showing up on the days we're called if we don't serve, and we get a whole $ .07 a mile. Which means I'll get about $ .14 gas money for each day I serve. Yay me!
So not worth missing work for. They need to update the pay so it's not set in the stone ages.
Hopefully I'll at least get an interesting trial, I'd hate to sit there and be bored to tears. But I don't want to go long without a recess. I can't make it that long without using the rest room.

I got called for jury duty about 3 months ago, fortunately the defendant was a previous client for the firm I worked for and I'd met him before. That got me out the first day.

Clerks sounds like a plan to me. I'll just have to get an IV going with Mountain Dew.
I've actually never seen it all the way through. I tried it once, but it didn't hold my interest. Maybe it will seem better watching it with you guys.
I feel like the new slogan for the U.S. Army. "I screwed up more stuff before noon than most people do all day!" That might not be their official slogan.
I took my car in this morning and my brother "followed" me. I use quotes because he shot past me for some reason. I passed the repair place accidentally and had to double back.
My brother let me borrow their car for a few hours to run some errands. I got some groceries and started to walk towards my apartment. It was then that I realized I forgot to take my house keys off my key ring at the repair shop.
I left a spare set at my brother's house just for this occasion so I flew over there. I had frozen stuff from the store so I had to get back quickly. It all worked out in the end, but it was just a hassle.
I said "f***" under my breath more times today than in the past six months.
Just a drive by rant for now. I have to take the car back.

*Realizes that it is his parents.*
Oh...I will never get it back.
