Remember the show Birds of Prey from 2 years ago? Huntress was on that. In the pre-Crisis comics she is the illegitimate daughter of Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Selina Kyle (Catwoman). In the post-Crisis comics I think she's just a teacher at Robin's school. Her powers are the pretty standard super strength, super endurance, super reflexes stuff. Very similar to Buffy.

"Birds of Prey" is a very girl power comic I guess you could say. The basic premise is that after being shot in the spine by the Joker, Batgirl becomes paralyzed but still wanting to fight crime takes on a new super hero alias, Oracle. Oracle teams up with Huntress and Black Canary, another female super hero, and they fight crime and Barbara (Oracle/Batgirl) acts as the brains of the operation since she's stuck in a wheelchair.
The show followed a pretty similar concept except for the fact that they used the pre-Crisis story for Huntress, so instead of her just being an ally of Batman she was Batman's daughter on the show, and they replaced Black Canary with Black Canary's daughter.

Actually, that plot only includes the TV series storylines. The AUTHENTIC BoP stories revolve around Black Canary and Oracle.
Barbara Gordon, who was also Batgirl, was shot by the Joker, paralyzing her, in the Killing Joke (a graphic novel in every sense of the phrase- the villain also rapes her in one of the most disturbing scenes in comic history). Now in a wheelchair, she acts as Oracle, a mistress of technology. Dinah, the daughter of the original Black Canary took on her mother's mantle and works with Barbara- they call themselves the Birds of Prey. Oracle is the brains, while Dinah acts out her orders. They're a very interesting team, who have tangled with numerous plots and supervillains.
Huntress, who is not in ANY WAY related to Batman or Catwoman biologically speaking, was a teen girl whose parents were killed by the mob. Like Batman, she took up a costumed identity, but unlike him, she was willing to use lethal force. Bats eventually trained her in the arts of crime fighting, and she now acts as a hero. She is an infrequent associate of the Bat-team, and helped out in the No Man's Land story arch.
Batman and Selina (Catwoman) Kyle have always been flirtatious, but they were not linked romantically, although they have worked together. Recently, they crossed the line, so to speak, but the sultry Poison Ivy turned out to be behind it in the 'Hush' series (correct me if I'm wrong about that last point).
Speaking of comics, I think I'll buy the No Man's Land series in Graphic Novel form soon. Basically, an earthquake hits Gotham, destroying most of the city, so Batman and the police force team up with the rest of the Gotham heros (as well as, in a strange twist of fate, Poison Ivy and the Penguin!) to bring the city back to justice. Meanwhile, gang wars are raging, and Arkham Asylum's inmates, including the Joker and his babe, Harley Quinn, Two-Face and the Scarecrow are wreaking havok on the city. Quite intriguing, although it's been highly criticized, so was the Long Hallowe'en, and I loved it to bits.

How have I missed this thread.
IMO, The original Gwen died in a time when dying still meant a thing and the story was more important and multi-arc crossovers.
And she died because she was beloved, not because she was boring. She was an innocent in the time when there were no innocents, and her death marked a major moment in comic history.
You should check out Marvels if you haven't already. Not only does it boast drool-worthy Alex Ross art, it also offers a whole new perspective on the whole superhero thing. And Gwen's death.

I've been keeping up with the House of M event in Marvel by reading many a synopsis and review. The last thing I've read shocked the sh*t outta me so far.

Oh my god, you guys have a Zapp Brannigan smilie now? I just had to use it! Anyway, I have to say; I've been starting to get into comics lately. Have read the first two issues of Joss' Astonishing X-Men, but I guess I'll have to wait for it to come out in proper book-format-thing before I read the rest. Also, I loved the Serenity comics. Although I'm still waiting on my issue 3 to be delivered (after about.. two months? It's okay though, my issue 2 just arrived last week. So I'm guessing it's just slow. Oh so very slow). I read Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, which was pretty good, although I'm clearly not up to speed on the backstory. Thank god I found the wonders of my local comic book store. I thought I'd never find one. Of course, the staff are rather irritating. They really don't like giving refunds.
