OK, I've now seen Serenity. I downloaded it and made me a DVD...
All in all, I think it's a great film. Not perfect, but still great. All of the Firefly shinyness is there. I must admit I didn't like Wash's death - but not in a "WHEDON! YOU HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE MAN! I HAAAAAAAATE YOUUUUU!!" way that some of the blithering idiot fans tend to get all foamy at the mouth with. I just thought it was pointless. I know, I know - it's a Whedonesque thing to kill off an important and well liked character in a pointless way, so that we can see that life's a bitch, and yes, people DO die - but to me, he's already covered this ground before.
Also, I thought that the "Oh, let's not kill them now that our shameful secret has been exposed" bit at the end was rubbish. IMO, Joss painted himself into a corner, and put our heroes in a no-win situation. But you can't have everyone dying, can you? So it's time for a Crappy Plot Device.
But don't get me wrong - I LOVED the film - a (mostly) masterful exercise in shinyness - Fighty River was incredible, and I loved the Reaver backstory - their mixture of extreme bestial violence and tech skills (they can operate spaceships, after all) makes more sense now.

Glad you finally watched it, O'Trolled One.
I disagree about Wash's death in that I don't think it was pointless. It did what it meant to do, and that was to make us doubt their survival.

You may not hate Wash's death so much after getting a bit of distance from it. My reaction was pretty much the same the first time I saw it.
As time went on I began to see how much it added to the film, as much as I hate that he died.
Serenity is now #17 at the box office here in the U.S. according to Box Office Mojo. This is really good considering it's down to only 887 theaters now. It's per theater numbers are $1,190.
Doom was number one this week and it only made $15 million so you can see the box office numbers are bad all the way around. The Number 2 movie this week didn't pull in nearly as much as Serenity did it's opening weekend and I think it's in more theaters.
Actually, if you go here you can see how far down the total box office has gone. It's way down, possibly due to high gas prices. So going by this info Serenity isn't doing badly at all. You can't expect one movie to be able to make everyone start going to the theaters, no matter how shiny it is.
Here's a little comparison for opening night. Doom and Dreamer's numbers aren't official yet, but they should stay pretty much the same.
This Friday Doom was in 3,044 theaters and averaged $1,944 per theater. It's gross estimate is $5,919,000.
This Friday Dreamer is at number two - where Serenity was opening weekend. Dreamer is in 2,077 theaters and averaged $1,390 per theater. It's estimated gross it $2,790,000 for Friday.
On September 30th Serenity was in 2,188 theaters and averaged $1,805 per theater. The Friday gross was $3,949,340 - well beyond Dreamer and Serenity wasn't in that many more theaters.
Also, Dreamer and Doom have big name stars in them. If he big name stars can't pull in the numbers than how can a movie that's based on a canceled television show that most people have never heard of be expected to pull in the numbers?
Perspective is always a good thing. ;D
Which I think most of us have by now, but I know people keep being negative everywhere online so I thought I'd try to help keep hope alive.

Actually, I knew about Wash's death from spoilers a while back - and it didn't bother me.
Until I saw the film.
I just didn't like the way it was done, really.

I actually thought that was what was so good about his death, but then I wasn't spoiled beforehand so that could be a factor.

Oh I am the Master. All must bow down before me.
Kev tried to argue this point with me before and it was decided that I was the master. This was back when we were still in school.
Now what are you waiting for? Bow down!

And he didn't even give us a Some number out of 10 rating.
I'm guessing since he loved it he meant to give it a 10/10?
Can't you tell we miss you Mr. N? It's been far too long without a pudding war.

Serenity - 9/10
*throws pudding*
And what's this about people not liking the film because of Wash's death? Someone should give those cretinous numpties a big boot up the bum!
