I also didn't like Wash's death - mainly because Joss was (in my opinion) using one of his trademark cliches without a need for it (shocking death that comes out of nowhere? What a Whedony thing to do!). I agree.

TJ's right. The comics should probably the first you devour, since they bridge the gap between the end of the series to the beginning. The rest, however, aren't essential reading as such. Meaning that if you miss any stories if you missed them. However, they are great if you are eager to read more of the verse.
1) Finding Serenity. A collection of essays and thoughts on the Verse and it's inhabitants written by some of sci-fi's greats.Very thought-provoking, funny, and occasionaly, provides insights you haven't thought about. Kaylee even writes one article. Articles span from the real reason Firefly failed, to Why Wash and Zoe work, to a hilarious speculation where Enterprise and Firefly exchanges crew.
2) Serenity: The Official Visual Guide As the name states, this is the official companion to the movie, offering hundreds of pictures of casts, behind the scenes take, conceptual ideas, the shooting script, Joss' every take on the movie (things like lighting, music, etc) and many more.
3) Serenity: the Novelization This might be a bit much if you've already gotten the Official Companion, but the novel does provide some insights to the thoughts of the characters, as well as answering some questions like how does Wash know Mr. Universe. You could probably get away with checking it out from the library or something
4) Done The Impossible A fan documentary DVD on the journey taken from Firefly to Serenity. Contents include a chock-full of features, including fan, cast and creator interviews, dictionaries, timeline, music videos and so much more. The DVD itself is hosted by Adam Baldwin, with occasional voiceovers by Jewel Staite. The DVD is almost done, with release slated for this month.

I now own the first three items on the list as well as the comics (all nine covers) and the Trade Paperback.
One of these days, I may start collecting the Graphic Novels of Buffy and Angel, that Joss had a hand in.

I've got the comics (just the bound collection, but which includes all nine covers), "Finding Serenity" (which is pretty cool) and the Visual Companion (which is very cool).
With the discs, the movie and a signed commemorative print of Wash by a graphic aritst and an "Ooh, Shiny!" button and a brown oilskin duster, I think I have more Serenalia than I have Buffynalia (a magnet and keychain [thanks, Cordy!] and the Collectors Edition [thanks dez!] and three Watchers Guides (the latter in shocking disrepair)) or Angelia (five seasons [S2 signed by Julie Benz], and two Casefiles [thanks, Cordy!]) and an FBT.
I love Serenalia.

Nice list Nick. I wholeheartedly agree with it. I have the top three items on the list as well and they are so wonderful to read.
I also have the novelization which has so many interesting insights into things. I love the backstory on Mr. Universe.
I haven't even heard of the dvd so not I'm gonna have to get something else. That sounds so very shiny. ;D
I also have a collection of videos, trailers, and the viral marketing campaign on my computer from the months leading up to the movie.
The rest of my Jossverse list is way too extensive to list yet again. Let's just say I have lots and lots of Jossverse. ;D

I love Amazon too. The game I ordered with the gift certificate my sister sent should be arriving either today or tomorrow. I so can't wait to start playing it.
If it's as good as the first one you guys may not see me for awhile. ;D
