Nope, I'm stuck here. Wearing many layers, under a duvet...lol Deploying the Knife-Wielding Closet Gibbon against asshat landlords worldwide.
It's not necessarily going to provide any actual help, but the image is a satisfying one.

ITL, Around here,we had a nice immigrant lady 'employed' (?) by an absentee owner who told her he was tired of paying utilities for his units and for her to cancel the contract with the water and power people. She was VERY new to how things are done here and speaks little or no English. When the utilitiy folks reminded her the money was owing, she informed them they were dropping the service. The people in the apartments would be paying on their own from now on. One *wee* little problem: The occupants hadn't been told and they made the naive assumption that the monies they'd JUST PAID toward their 'utilities included' contracts covered all that. That Friday, the power and water went off and the temperature dropped to fimbul winter temperatures. (It had been in the high 60's and 70's before,of course...) Imagine a whole complex full of old, sick people and families with new babies who are stunned to find their service disrupted after hours on the weekend. Calling the emergency numbers for the utilitiy bunch or the landlord's agent was pretty useless. Calling the mayor, the police, the local paper, the various crisis centers/charities AND the utility folk *did* help. The PTB made sure the people got a suitable place to stay for the night (a hotel,I think...) and service was turned back on the next morning "pending examination of the case Monday". One resident had borrowed money his family couldn't afford to get things turned back on earlier. That payment was FINALLY returned as all tenants had things restored whether they'd paid a reconnection fee or not. As I understand, local authorities have given the owner much the same treatment Willow did Warren and some local attornies Wolfram and Hart rejected for being too ruthless are representing the tenants in civil prosecutions. They don't call these people 'renters' for nothing! Feel free to follow the example of these poor souls. It worked!!!

My utilities have never been included - my rent goes towards rent, and nothing else. My landlord is responsible for getting the gas fire serviced, however - so if he doesn't, he's in trouble.
I know he'll send an engineer round now that he's been called on it - but until the engineer gets here, I remain cold! lol

*Exalts Itl in hopes that the thought will keep him a little warmer*
That's a serious bummer. This is so not the time of year you want to be without heat.
My day has been pretty good so far. I didn't have to be at work until 11, and then the General Manager was all about cutting labor today so I worked a whole 2 hours and got to go home.
It's cool to have that happen every once in awhile - as long as it's not all the time. I can't afford to loose hours all the time.
So basically I got up, took a shower, went to work, ate before I clocked on (my free meal), then did meat for two hours which made me smelly and sweaty so I came home and took another shower and now I'm surfing the net until it's time to get Enzo from school.
A very non-stressful day. Oh, I also put gas in the tank and did a load of laundry.

Yay,Cordy!!!!!!! BTW,you may never know what your smelly meats are doing for someone. During the bad days of his cirrhosis, all my brother Tim could eat was McDonald's fish sandwiches. He woke up from having a port put in and asked for TWO!!! My youngest brother scoured Nashville for a MickeyD's that was open at 3 a.m. or so and got back just in time to get one sandwich down Tim before he slept. He demanded the second upon waking but since it had gotten eaten during that 11 hours,Jim got him replacements. Fish sandwiches and gallons of green, red or white tea........ If Subway's Jason can treat heart disease, Ronald can claim one more way he helps people with cancer. If Tim's food was touched by someone as sweet as our Cordy,no wonder it had curative properties. Just thought I'd pass that along.....

ITL -- Nothing for it -- you'd all have to snuggle together under the blankets.
Just to pass the time you could all play find the button.
Cordy: Nonstressful days are the best! I found a router but now my service is out at home (my sister was trying to check her mail when she discovered the problem.
They've sent some guys around -- apparently the connection coming into the building was very old and it's being replaced, so I should be online again by this eve.
Y'know, at home.

BTW - my landlord just came round to tell me that the service engineer will be here on Saturday morning - so tomorrow will be another cold one!

ITL,whatever you pay for, your home has to be safe and livable or your contract is void. (Here,a landlord can evict a tenant if he loses his power, wrecks the unit or whatever just because of that. The landlord must insure that the renter's place is fit for habitation at all times or face legal consequences.) Don't fail to look into your obligations. He might have to provide electric or gas space heaters, electric blankets, alternative lodging, etc. At the least, subtract any costs you incur and fasten *copies* of your expense sheet and the statements of the gas board and service engineer. (Be sure they *fix* it and don't just turn it back on and initial work they didn't do. --- the lady whose 'inspected' house burned ) If you've had flu-ish symptoms, headaches, have lots of tarnish on things, etc. you may have had imperceptible gas poisoning you for some time. Include THAT if it's happened. Good luck and stay warm, sweetie.

Oh, I won't incurr any costs - the landlord will be paying for the service. All I pay for is the gas I use.
