Incompetent people should never, under any circumstances, be put in positions of authority.
Never.
This week has been a week from hell. In many ways, some of them personal but then there's work.
I'm so glad I didn't work on Monday. From what I understand things got really bad. Bonnie and Christy - both managers - apparently almost got into a Jerry Springer style fight at work.
And why you ask? Because they're both insane.
Christy is grieving, her Mom and her brother recently passed away. And she's always a bit cranky anyway. It's her nature.
Bonnie is, well Bonnie. She's always been high strung but she recently had a baby and the Doctor has her on meds that she apparently decided to just go off of. She's crazy anyway but just going cold-turkey off of her medication was a really bad idea.
So Christy is in charge of the grill area and Bonnie is running for drive-thru (in other words she's picking up the orders for Drive-thru). It's really busy so they get a bit behind in the back.
They are doing the best they can to get the food up but Bonnie starts getting impatient. She starts yelling at Christy. Christy takes it for awhile but she's not a saint and can't deal with Bonnie for very long. Actually nobody can deal with her for long.
Bonnie wants to send Jo-Jo The Happy Circus Boy back to help them - which would be a mistake since he'd only make things worse - which offends Christy.
Well the screaming match apparently got pretty bad. Bonnie threatened to call the owner - and basically "tell on Christy", how immature is that?. So Christy tells her to go ahead and do it. "I'll even give you the phone!" she says.
So she goes back and gets the cordless phone and brings it to Bonnie. Somewhere around this time Gina steps in and takes them to the back where things were apparently getting really scary.
Lenny (Jo-Jo) panics and calls the owner - who apparently started slamming doors in his house and peeled out of his drive-way at this time (according to his wife).
So the owner chews them both out and asks Lenny, "What, you couldn't handle to girls having a chick fight?"
See Lenny is salary and out ranks them, even though he's only been there for 4 months.
I was so glad I wasn't working that day. I heard about it when we all went swimming at the owner's house.
The next day everyone is still on edge. I was working up front with Bonnie and we were busy. So she kept bothering grill area to send up their people to help us up front. I told Bonnie that we should try to do it ourselves are they're going to get behind.
She says, "I said we're not going to kill ourselves today."
I wanted to tell her, "So it's okay to make the grill team kill themselves?"
So needless to say they got behind on breaks in the back since we kept taking their people.
So Michelle made a comment about that and Bonnie overhead her and got upset.
She tried to pick a fight with Michelle but Michelle just told Bonnie that she wasn't going to argue with her.
Bonnie wouldn't leave it alone and I was thinking "here we go again".
Luckily Michelle isn't as short tempered as Christy or it would have been on again.
But I heard Bonnie tell a couple of people that when Laura gets back (she's in Vegas this week) she's going to tell her.
Bonnie is 42 year's old. She is way too old to be doing the whole "I'm going to tell" thing. She's a freakin' manager for crying out loud.
Well Wednesday went pretty well. No melt downs or anything.
Today would have gone well if Lenny wasn't so damn incompetent.
He's always picking up the wrong things when he runs but he did reasonably well in the morning - mostly because he kept having people take over for him so he could do other things.
But the way he ran his shift was just awful. He got all frazzled because he changed the shift sheet several times and then couldn't seem to remember where he ultimately decided people should go.
I tried to offer advice but since I'm not a manager - by choice - of course I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Then around 11 Michelle came running up saying the computer had an error message about a "UPS" thing.
Well I tried to tell Michelle it was just the uninterpretable power supply and I was going to ask Lenny if I could go look at it. He wouldn't listen to me.
Then Greg - the maintenance guy - came up and told Lenny almost exactly what I tried to tell him it was and he listened to Greg.
So I tried to get his attention to tell him I could probably figure out what the problem was - he was going to call tech support. He's such an idiot.
Then the owner went through drive-thru. So he came in and looked at it. The problem was the cable had come loose.
I told the owner that I could have fixed it if Lenny would have listened to me - I mean it's not like I have a degree in this or anything. He laughed and told Lenny to have me fix it next time.
Score for me. ;D
Anyway 1:00 came along and Lenny was trying to tell me that I was off. I told him I was off at 2. So he made me go check my schedule again, and of course I was right.
So I asked him where he wanted me.
He told me to take over reg. 3 - but Kelsey was on it. I asked him if he was sure and he said yes.
This was a mistake. He should have had me back up counter since I'm a stronger worker than her.
I'm good in any position and she's fairly new and one of the night kids.
You need your stronger people in the positions where they can do the most good.
So I did fries and backed up counter anyway, but when counter got busy I would have to take orders. That meant I couldn't watch fries since I was stuck at the register.
Lenny apparently can't multitask - like at all - so of course we ran out of fries.
So I fixed the situation - again.
Then he would just take off and not have anyone take his spot running for Drive-thru.
So I would have to take over for him so Laura (different from the other one) wouldn't get behind.
Well she had to go count the safe - to take over - so that left Lenny by himself in drive-thru.
It was 5 till 2 so I asked him what he wanted me to do before I left. He told me to sweep.
So I'm cleaning and one of the girls that had come in at 11 (I came in at 7) asked if she could go home. He told her yes.
Then the other girl - the only one with an actual register on counter - asked if she could go home. He told her yes.
He didn't make them do anything before they left and they both came in after I did. The person who comes in first goes home first if they're all off at the same time.
Anyway, the idiot had just sent home everyone that he had to help him up front. Laura was still in the back counting the safe.
Counter and drive-thru both got hit.
So he started taking orders on counter and didn't even tell anyone to take over in drive-thru.
Well I started getting the drive-thru orders. Totally shifted back into manager mode. I was furious with him though. He's such an idiot!
They didn't even have all the breaks out yet and half his crew got off at 2:00.
When Laura got back up front I told her what he did, she was pissed too. She told me I could go home and she was sorry. I said, "It's not your fault he did that"
And I stayed to help her get caught up.
Then I clocked out.
I was talking to Michelle about what happened. I told her "It almost makes me wish I'd taken Tammy up on the management offer. I hate seeing things go like this while I'm in no position to fix it."
Everything was so disorganized. The way he positioned his people was horrible.
He had Pam in three different positions, she can't be in three places at once.
And he had Michelle in grill area and backing up counter. She is supposed to be off the floor on Thursday afternoons to do charts.
I really hope they were slow the rest of the afternoon because the way he had things set up they were going to sink, badly.
I so hope I don't have to work with him tomorrow.
If he would have had enough people I would have taken him to the back and chewed his @ss out for the way he was running his shift.
It's not my place to do so anymore but I can't stand to see such incompetence.
He's a nice guy, he's just not management material. He's barely "crew member" material.
He gets flustered way too easily, he can't multi-task, he just leaves his position and doesn't have anyone take his spot, he's always picking up the wrong items, he skips orders all the time, and he really doesn't seem to know the meaning of "aces in their places".
I can be in any position in that store. So a smart person would have me in grill, drive-thru, or backing up counter since that's where your strongest people need to be.
Anyway, that's part of the reason I'm all bad a moody today. Add to that PMS, a major headache, and some other personal issues that are way larger than anything at McDonald's and you get the idea.
I'm feeling much better now. A good rant always helps. ;D

See, I knew you had PMS. Want some Midol? I wasn't going to say anything, but there's been a lot of sandbox posting in here and I thought it would be useful to step outside the Magnificent Bastage box and just be me for a moment.
Which is likely ill-advised, but here goes.
* deep breath *
OK. When a person has had a bad day, as we've just witnessed, oftentimes they forget that its entirely possible another person has had a bad day, too.
I haven't. Rather, I've had an exhausting week where my boss has informed me -- coming off the 40 hours in three days I put in last week -- that I'm not working hard enough and I'm coming in too late (ignoring the fact that I'm there for 8-1/2 to 9 hours all the same -- you'll notice he's not standing at my desk ordering me to go home at 5 when I come in at 9, for example). I haven't taken a lunch break once all week and I'm actually ahead on my assignments. Still, somehow, not good enough.
I've put in eight hours at rehearsals so far and we've worked my part three times. Tonight we were going to completely skip it again (and we skipped part of it anyway).
I realize that it's because the director has a lot of confidence in me. But first, I'm willing to read other people's parts who aren't there, despite the time it takes away from developing my own character, and also, even if I almost certainly know my part, what about the other actors in the scene with me? We really ought to be rehearsing the entire play once in a while and not spend all our time focused on a couple of trouble spots.
So that was good, and less of a complete waste of my time than it has been the rest of the week.
Also, I have two writing projects I need to work on here pretty quick but haven't the inclination or focus when I get done with these 12-hour days.
So I've been enduring all that on top of a couple of personal issues I'm not going to bore anyone with here either.
Now. Comments like "You're just the Bored Diva" and "You have the PMS" are normally blood under the bridge, no big deal. But sometimes they start jumping up and down on one's last nerve.
So we move into "Oh it's just a joke, stop taking everything so seriously" territory. Which -- again, I'm not judging -- but in essence is saying "Your feelings aren't important."
So to sum up:
1) Other people are sometimes having bad days at the same time you are. 2) Friends give each other crap, but also try to gauge when they're able to take it and back off once in a while, too, if they sense that they are not. 3) And because we are human beings, we do honestly care about how everyone else is feeling.
If that's out of line, if that's bitchy, or insensitive, or if that's imperious or diva-esque, I apologize.
It's late and I've got a long day ahead of me tomorrow.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled chatroom, already in progress.
Night everyone.

* in the cold light of day, this feels like a little much all in one place, but I still mean to say everything I said here, and do honestly heart you all *
The week is ending ... better than it began, which is something, anyway.

you are a wise and caring person, tjaman.
i don't suppose the play people thought of what we did in the last play i was in?
the people who needed 'extra work' did it on their own time.
regular rehearsals were for whatever benefitted the play as a whole.
(not just lights or the folks in act 2 ,scene one or the male lead,etc......)
we tried it the way you're describing.
not only did some poor patient souls get put through what you've endured but i was expected to eat (for real) during every rehash of the visitation scene.
my devotion to the theatre was outvoted by my diabetes and I refused to actually eat but 1 chicken leg and a half cup of nuts.
(they asked me to munch on a peach cobbler during the scene and eat cotton candy later.)
sometimes ya gotta cut people a reality check.

Thanks, q'cat.
As we're getting closer to performance, our approach is getting quite a bit better. Speaking of scene repetition, I was at the chiropractor yesterday for a sore back, probably from running this bit where I take a diving roll to the concrete three times in a row cause some other idiot missed his cue twice. Oy, did that get old fast.

AARRGGHH!!
Today I spent 20 quid on SCART leads and switchboxes because I intend to buy a new TV tomorrow. The crappy portable I have at the moment doesn't have SCART, so I have to run my DVD player through an old VCR - which gives a crappy, not-good-enough picture. A new (and bigger) TV is sorely needed. So I was looking forward to getting one tomorrow.
But today, my DVD player has decided it doesn't want to work anymore. When I put a disc in, it says NO DISC - as though there isn't one there. It's only a cheap DVD player, so that's what I reckon the problem is - it's just packed up. The warranty that came with it has run out, and I have no idea where I can go to get it fixed, let alone how much it would cost. Because DVD players are so cheap these days, I may as well get a new one.
But I can't afford a TV and a DVD player - only one or the other. Which defeats the point, somewhat. I either get a TV and wait until I can save up for a new DVD player, or vice versa.
It's the bad timing that bloody annoys me. ONE FECKING DAY before I get the TV, and the bloody DVD player packs up. That's why I want a new TV - to watch DVD's on.
I. Am. Bloody. Annoyed.

I had the same problem when I got a DVD player. I couldn't connect it directly to the TV and I had to go through the VCR. Unfortunately DVDs were made so you couldn't play them through a VCR. I guess they didn't want you taping them. Odd thing for them to worry about.
I managed to get around that obstacle though. A lot of work to accomodate a $40 WalM*rt DVD player.

you poor darlins'!
are y'all springing for HDTV or whatever?
one reason Jim and i have been dragging our feet on buying tech is that we're sure we'll either get the wrong thing or get good stuff and then have to put a new roof on the house or the kitten will need an orthodontist or something.
grrrrrrrrr.....
Good luck,kids!

Man that does suck ITL. You got a dvd cleaner cd to put in? Maybe that will help...though I'm sure you've already thought of that.
I think you should go ahead and get the tv. At least you can watch better tv while you save for dvd player.... maybe you could get a tv that'll let u hook up to ur puter and play dvds like that.
That has got to suck sweety. I hope it works out
