I went and saw it for the second time today...and it still shocked the heck of me. I actually cried when Book died in Mal's arms, and laughed too, when book made a funny during his death speech. Wash's death still surprised me and I knew that it was coming, just great piece of storytelling. And I finally saw the part where Mal touched Wash's three buttons at the top of the consol. Thanks to tj for pointing that out. All of the preformances were strong. I so can't wait to see it again, probably Wednesday night.

Another thing about the film I loved was when the crew was on the ship talking about bringing the tape to the Verse, and how Jayne quoted the Shepard saying, "If you can't do something smart, do something right." I just loved it, and spoke how he respected Book. Very good acting there. I think at that point Jayne finally got it, meaning what he saw at Miranda, and now he has something to fight for besides money.

I just remembered something that may have foreshawdowed Book's death. In the scene where Mal and Book were talking about the Operative, Mal told Book that Book will tell Mal why he knows whats he knows, and Book repsonded "No, I won't". Maybe Joss was being clever and foreshadowing Book's death.

Well the anger is finally letting up a bit on the Official Browncoats Site. There's even a wake for Wash and Book being held.
One of the posters said this:
That just gets my allergies going for some reason. I really miss Wash. We need to have a wake after Nick gets to see the movie so we can do it in it's own thread without spoiling anyone.

Wash was a big damn hero for saving everyone in The Train Job.
OK, all he did was show up, but he showed up at exactly the right time.
That's gotta be worth something.

Everyone was a hero in the movie. Even Jayne was!

I did a bad thing today.
I had to know if what I read was true, if Wash really died. It didn't make sense to me that he would, after all, they had all signed on for sequels. And there was that talk about starting a family with Zoe in Heart of Gold, but there was this nagging voice telling me that this was what Whedon does for a living.
I had to know for sure.
So I downloaded the movie.
And when Book died, I was relieved. Not because I was glad to see him go, but because I was glad it wasn't Wash. I must have read it wrong. I felt so relieved, I even forgot to feel angry because I still needed to know Book's backstory.
And all was good.
I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how ...
I hate Whedon. I hate him because he lulled me into believing that everything will be allright, and he knew that we would be expecting deaths, so he got one out of the way early on so we wouldn't see it coming. And we didn't
Curse you, Mr. Whedon, at your sudden but inevitable betrayal.
For the next portion of the movie, I felt like Zoe, detached at the surface, but brimming with anger and the desire to hit something. I can't remember the last time I felt this way. (Actually, I can. It was during the finale of a certain series about a vampire. Coincidently someone died then too. )
I've since deleted the movie, since I've no wish to subject myself to such pain again. At least, not until I see it on the big screen. And you can count on the fact that I will drag people to see this show, just so that they can hate Mr. Whedon like I do.

Now, that is exactly why I refused to comment on the movie until I absorbed it all.
I hated, hated, hated Joss right after I saw it. I didn't want to think about it, I was so angry. But then I did think, and I realized his genius is this ability to make us love these characters so much that we hate him.
Did that make sense to anybody else?

Yes, it makes perfect sense. I was so upset after seeing it the first time but I had already bought the tickets for the next show so I went ahead and watched it again.
It did make things better, that and a little bit of time. Now I can see the genius in what he did even though I still get chocked up when he dies.
Nick, I can't believe you downloaded the movie - but then I guess I can't really blame you. I mean you've still got several months until it's out in theaters where you are and you keep seeing us gush over it.
I was wondering what you were going to think about it. It's cool that we can now talk in front of you about it though.

I can't believe I did it too, well actually, I can. But I certainly thought I'd last longer than this before the temptation took over.
A big part of that, like I said earlier, was due to the fact I had to know if it was true if Wash died. I just had too. And I don't really have any other excuse than that.
And Kev, if you mean "like" as in love having my emotions toyed with and then having my heart ripped out afterwards, then yes, I liked the movie.
But right now, I'm just felling a bit shocked.

Don't worry Nick. A lot of us felt that way after seeing it. Just give it time and you'll feel better.
In the meantime have a cookie.

A week later and fresh from a second viewing, I know I love the movie.
ONE HUNDRED TOP MOMENTS FROM "SERENITY"
100) Jayne's "Let's be bad guys." 99) Mal's "I aim to misbehave." 98) Inara and Mal's creepy wave 97) The Operative's "There is no shame in this death." 96) Serenity tricked out like an evil biker chyck. 95) Fanty and Mingo. 94) Zoe's line "Well, now we can afford to retire and give up this life of petty thieving." 93) The piece flying off at the end. 92) The font used in the credits was pretty cool. 91) The wifebot. 90) Mal's "Dear Buddha. I wanna pony and a big plastic rocket ..." 89) Shepherd Book's oblique and somewhat fatalistic reference to his life before Southdown Abbey, that he told Mal he didn't need to share with him. 88) The fact that they were able to bring the entire cast back together again. 87) The NUMB3RS guy as Mr. Universe (which would've been cooler if he'd ever once been referenced in the show). 86) Inara's "Please. Just spend an hour with him" in reference to The Operative saying Mal couldn't make him angry. 85) Kaylee's "I haven't had anything twixt my nethers for more than a year that weren't powered by a battery." 84) Mal and Jayne's very different reactions to that line. 83) Serenity getting a good going over in Beaumont. 82) The hologram they picked up on Miranda. 81) Zoe telling that guy the definition of a hero during the heist: "A hero is someone who gets everyone killed." 80) The music in the closing credits. 79) The fact that Jayne knows how to play a guitar. 78) The capture Mal was looking at that Kaylee took in Inara's shuttle before she left. 77) Mal in drag (again) to meet with Inara. 76) Inara in the scene where she meets the Operative. 75) The Operative: "Define disappeared." 74) The music at the very end of the closing credits. 73) Jayne getting drunk and deciding to give River to The Alliance. 72) Jayne's worry that he'd fall asleep if Simon uttered River's sleep trigger. 71) Jayne's little confrontation with Mal: "You wanna run this ship?" "Yeah!" "Well ... you can't." 70) Simon hitting Mal for putting River in danger. 69) Mal telling Inara that she is basically his dysfunctional onboard guidance system: "You turn me every which way." 68) Inara telling Mal she's not sure she wants to go back to the training center. Mal: Good answer." 67) Kaylee's determination to survive the battle with the Reavers so as to get her some doctorin'. 66) Me walking out of the theater and out to the parking lot in my coat. 65) The reasonably decent-sized crowd in there with me. 64) Jayne wondering what's up with the Reavers. 63) The mule. 62) Mal yelling at Kaylee for the ship going wonky, after she told him she'd basically been keeping ti together with chicken wire and the power of prayer for half a year. 61) The Operative. 60) The Reavers 59) Shepherd Book. 58) Inara. 57) Jayne. 56) Simon Tam. 55) Kaylee. 54) Wash. 53) Zoe. 52) Mal. 51) and, oh my G-d ... 50) River. 49) That message the Alliance wove into the commercial and everywhere else to trigger River. 48) That fight that she had in Beaumont. 47) That fight that she had with the Reavers. 46) River finally being OK on Miranda. 45) Her foot to Simon's throat to keep him from putting her to sleep. 44) Mal getting very upset with Simon about not telling him about what she might do. 43) My singing of the "Firefly" theme as I drove home. 42) The very existential place I was in mentally as I sang it. 41) River's propensity for hiding on ceilings. 40) That hologram of Simon and River at the beginning. 39) The Operative getting very cross with the research staff for bringing key members of Parliament into contact with a psychic. 38) The dreams they implanted in River. 37) The effects of Pax. 36) The car accidents I was very nearly in on my way home due to my allergies acting up in a huge way. 35) Kaylee getting shot. 34) Simon trying to treat her while bleeding from that most Whedonesque of all injuries, a wound to the gut. 33) The gash to Zoe's back. 32) Jayne finally getting to bring his grenades. 31) Kaymon. 30) River peering down at the Kaymon. 29) The beating Serenity took during the battle with the Reavers. 28) River flying the ship, this time without using emphatic gestures. 27) The "Understand we'll go hand in hand, but we'll walk alone in fear." kickline at the end. Oh, wait -- that's just the musical version that was just playing in my head. Never mind. 27) Inara repainting the logo. 26) Mal telling River that it takes love to keep a ship in the sky. 25) Book dying in Mal's arms. 24) The ghost planet Miranda became in the wake of The Pax. 23) Everyone's various reactions to that. 22) Simon: "Am I talking to Miranda right now?" 21) River's reaction to that. 20) Mal confronting River about her flightplan to Miranda. 19) Wash: "Oh G-d, oh G-d, we're all gonna die." 18) Mal ordering Wash to land the ship, and him saying he can absolutely assure him that that would happen. 17) The dinosaurs that were still in place at the pilot station. 16) How wet my cheeks got during both viewings. They need to do something about the pollen count in those theaters. 15) Jayne quoting Book: "If you can't do something smart, do something right." 14) The camera rises at the beginning and we see Mal and Wash on the bridge. 13) Inara: "That isn't incense." 12) The fact that I tried to see this film at 4:10 and none of the ATM machines in the mall were in service, but I was able to come back and see it again at 7, missing both the encore presentation of "Lost" from Wednesday (I remembered on my way to the theater that I forgot to set my VCR) and the other theater group's presentation of "Steel Magnolias," which I've been told is extraordinarily good, and I'm not even a little bit unhappy about it. 11) The fact that this movie got made at all. 10) Mal's exchange with Zoe about whether the ship was good to fly. 9) Her equally portentious answer. 8) The hope for a Mal and Inara hookup in future films. 7) Zoe's costuming and heartbreaking performance during the funeral. 6) Wash: "I am a leaf on the wind," and his heroic piloting during the firefight with the Reavers. 5) Their hand-to-hand fight with the Reavers intercut with Mal's hand-to-hand fight with The Operative. 4) Wash ...
I'm sorry.
Give to me moment.
* deep intake of breath *
* long exhale *
4) Wash dying from that most Whedonesque of all injuries, a stake to the heart. Easily the most heartbreaking thing in the whole damn movie and one of the most soul-shredding deaths in the 'verse, Right up there with Anya and Tara and Buffy's death in "The Gift." 3) The horrified gasps in both theaters when that happened. 2) The point. Which was that the truth will always get out. Regardless of how much a government wishes to meddle with us, however much they want to write histories that hide the truth, if they want to use deception or trickery or just implant fake memories that are not ours and turn us into killing machines to mop up their messes, their actions will be documented, their treachery will be remembered. They will leave fingerprints, they will be traced, secret wars will not stand up to scrutiny. And if you want to know what will make a credit-driven, Inara-less darkened, soul-scorched petty-thief mercenary do something "noble as a grape" (I think that's what Jayne said), don't meddle with his crew, don't defeat him and leave him with a deep-seated grudge, and don't ever let him get access to information about your meddling gone terribly, terribly wrong, because he'll truck it right on out to Mr. Universe and it will show up on all channels, regardless of whether you murder the messenger or not. 1) Death is our gift. Never fade away. And you will never, ever stop that mother-ruttin' signal.
I think we're gonna rise again.
Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Whedon.
That was just ... shiny.
Do it again! Do it again!

I gotta say I thought of that at the end of the movie too, tonight, on your moment 27. It was in my head.
I saw the movie for the 4th time tonight, I gotta say that this is the best crowd I have seen for the movie, even more people than the crowd in Vegas. They were all into the movie, and the crowd went hysterical in the scene where Mal shoots the Operative in Inara's place. And also right when Wash says "I'm a leaf in the wind, watch how..." and all of the sudden the entire crowd gasped when Wash was staked. I cannot emphasize how good the crowd was tonight, they were stupendous. I could tell that they hadn't seen the movie before tonight, so that's a good sign.
And great list tj.
